Let's examine these so-called "facts"
1. "You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check"
No you cannot: Wikipedia: "All NFA items [including fully automatic weapons] must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Private owners wishing to purchase an NFA item must obtain approval from the ATF, obtain a signature from the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) who is the county sheriff or city or town chief of police (not necessarily permission), pass an extensive background check [conducted by the FBI] to include submitting a photograph and fingerprints, fully register the firearm, receive ATF written permission before moving the firearm across state lines, and pay a tax."
2. "and most likely without having to show an identification card"
All firearms purchases from federally licensed dealers must be approved through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
At a minimum, buying and selling between private sellers without an FFL is only legal if both are legal residents of the state in which the transaction is taking place. State issued photo ID is used to establish the legality of such transactions. The transaction must also be in compliance with whichever of the 28,000 federal, state, and local gun control laws apply in the given location. This applies to all private sales regardless whether they occur at gun shows, a private residence, or anywhere else.
"Then there's the so-called terror gap, which prevents gun sellers from checking purchasers against terrorism watch lists."
Unlike a criminal record, being placed on a terror watch list is done without due process of law, as Senator Ted Kennedy learned much to his dismay. Nor is a terror watch list a list of terrorists. It is a list of people who have traits Homeland Security deems to be terrorist-like. Actual terrorists are arrested, not merely inconvenienced at airports.
"In November 2008, radical Islamist terrorists killed 164 people and brought Mumbai to its knees with a coordinated rampage on targets including hotels, a cafe, a Jewish community center, a hospital and a movie theater."
India effectively BANS civilian ownership of firearms. They have gun control laws the Brady Campaign could only dream of here in the US, and all they did was leave their citizens completely helpless. In contrast, Mumbai-style attacks have consistently failed in Israel because of the high percentage of armed civilians, particularly civilians with concealed handguns.
"Unless Congress develops the backbone to override the NRA on critical public safety measures, Mumbai could well be a preview of an American and New York horror."
We have already had a Mubai-style attack in the US. It was at Ft. Hood, a place where Army Regulation 190-14 made sure that every single solder who could have shot terrorist Nidal Hasan was unarmed.
