Obama to address Gun Control

From an Email

While this went around a few months ago on the net, with the gnashing of teeth, and whining of the anti's it might bear repeating:

The Gun is Civilization

by Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret)

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.

People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

A Take on Terrorist Level Threat by John Cleese

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

They have video of the AZ shooting

unlikely FBI will release it

I seldom agree with her, but I do on this one

This isn't a case of "There outta be a law." There are laws on the books to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Sugarman lies again

In all the interviews I saw Zamudio never drew his gun

So Since the State will not comply with Federal law

We should change the gun laws??

Steve Lopez is whiney little liberal

The article pushed it

So how many laws did the student break before his gun got dropped, adding some more laws would have done what?

I agree the AZ shooter should not have had a gun, but there are legal steps, that have to be done before you take away a persons rights. (Steve your article does lead me to believe you have some mental issues)

People are tired of being victims, the police can't protect you, and the courts won't, Mr Lopez reminds of the guy on the couch in this video

One Gun Was Getting A Lot Of Attention

The Kimber Solo

I still prefer something bigger, but a lot of people like little guns, so I'm sure it will sell like crazy.

Gunshow Yesterday

Hadn't been in awhile, so went to the Goodman show in Sharonville, thought the crowd would be light as the 1500 was on up in Indy, I was wrong.

Arrived about an hour after they opened, and it still took 20 minutes to get in, but at least the line started inside the building. I could tell by the crowd that there were a lot of newbies.

Inside it was crowded, and from the dealers heard sales were good.

Saw a couple of temptations, but no had to haves.

When we left the line was 100 plus feet long outside of the building, as we neared the end of the line I rather loudly said by the time they get in all the dealers will be sold out, boy did that draw some looks.

They seem to think

They found Blackbeards sword

I'm surprised

I have tried several inside the waistband holsters, and have found all of them uncomfortable even with a semi compact gun. Jeff at Stoner Holsters told me I needed to try his tuckable.

So I went all out and told him to make one for my 1911 Government model, and have been wearing it for 2 days, and to be honest not to bad, it is pretty comfortable, it has a stainless steel band at the top and stays open. The holster has a cant of about 25 degrees.

Sounds like a lot of Hype

New Bullet Technology

Since the primary purpose of using a firearm in self defense, is stopping the BG, they use the word kill a lot. Many states list the firearm as a deadly weapon, so the question of using non lethal ammo could come into question.
(Never shoot to wound, Shoot to Stop)

Even if it is successful, and limited to LE, it looks like a mine field of law suits if used.

Nudists VS

Gun Range

You Really do Not have a "Right" to Drive

Think of how many lives could be saved each year if we banned Driving:

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 37,261 people died in traffic crashes in 2008 in the United States (latest figures available), including an estimated 11,773 people who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Drunk driving fatalities accounted for 32% of all traffic deaths last year, that is, on average someone is killed in an alcohol-impaired driving crash every 45 minutes in the U.S. (Source: NHTSA/FARS, 2009)

Of Homicides in 2008, 10,164 were with firearms Source FBI UCR 2008

While the idea of banning driving is ludicrous, we could enact sensible driving laws, to control driving while impaired. We should not allow easy access to vehicles to those bent on driving while under the influence.

Perhaps certain vehicles should be banned, as they are the choice of those that will cause human death and suffering. Why didn't anyone blame the Truck used in this incident, that resulted in the death of 27 people and injured 34?

The driver was a repeat offender, yet still able to gain access to a motor vehicle, perhaps he didn't set out to kill 27 people, but that is what happen.

Perhaps the sane part of the AZ shooter didn't set out to shoot 20 people, but the result was the same.

After all the Foundiing Fathers could not have envisioned the powerful vehicles we have today

So Many Errors

Not only are many of the facts wrong , but the author infers, that there is no BG checks in AZ, while in Iowa, Illinois & Wisconsin, there is, there is no reason to believe, that the AZ shooter couldn't have gotten his, rarely known about Glock in those states if that is where he resided. New Gun? fill out a 4473, same requirement in all fifty states.

But when this took place, no one called for more controls on gasoline, or gas cans or lighters.

I wrote to John Glenn who was in the Senate at the time about this incident,I ask if the government would consider requiring people to show ID when purchasing gas, and that it be made law to serial number & register Gas containers with the government, and in his reply letter he stated no laws will stop the act of a madman

I'd say the same stands today

That sounds like a lot of unintentional discharges

In several cases, an officer accidentally fired his weapon.

Instructor Kathy Daniel said it's hard to determine what the most common mistake is when looking at accidental discharges.

Chief Ralph Painter was shot and killed with his own service weapon after responding to a burglary in progress at a local car stereo store at approximately 10:45 am. A struggle ensued when he made contact with the suspect and he was disarmed and fatally shot.

The suspect engaged other responding officers in a shootout before being wounded and taken into custody.

A machine gun is not a firearm?

Defense attorney Rosemary Curran Scapicchio insisted machine guns can be considered firearms.

Guida said a firearm is defined as any gun with a barrel less than 16 inches long. While some machine guns meet that definition, he said, all machine guns are in a different class because they are automatic weapons.

I will agree there should have been more adult over sight, and control in this case, I'm not willing to see the definition of what a firearm is by the court.
