Golden Rule of Gun Safety is keep the gun pointed in a "SAFE" direction, if he can't understand that he has no business being a cop!
You keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, until you have confirmed it is unloaded, & even after you have confirmed it is unloaded, you still don't point it at anything, you wouldn't want to shoot. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, does not mean sometimes!!

Sure he was.
Methinks this was not gun safety issue, but rather a spurned advance or somesuch.
We may never really know the truth, but that story just doesn't pass the smell test..
