Firearms have been with us since about 1100 A.D.  Bamboo tubes, wrapped in resin-soaked fibers, gave way to copper, iron, and steel tubes.  Ignition systems have progressed from a hot iron pushed through a hole to electronic triggers.  Bore diameter has ranged from .17 inches to twenty inches.

The use of firearms has always been a martial art.  Martial, or military, usage is the primary reason for the development and improvement of firearms.  Sporting uses, such as hunting and competition, naturally followed, but firearms are primarily weapons for combat.  When developing the art of Hojutsu, we looked at combat-proven techniques of utilizing firearms.

No other firearms training system can claim the combat effectiveness of the Modern Technique.  It is widely used by S.W.A.T. teams from Arizona to Alaska.  Statistics show hit averages over 99% by some agencies using this training system; far above the national average of hits by police officers. 23 practitioners (Hojutsu-ka) have shot 21 men, with a documented hit rate of 99.3%; the 13 who shot pistols had 100% accuracy and 100% fatalities. There are other styles of shooting that work well in competition, but none as well in actual fights. Our arena is the street, not the competition range.

Hojutsu is taking the use of firearms and blending it with “traditional” empty hand techniques.  The true master will know his weapons intimately. He will know by feel and sound the status of his weapon, and if a problem occurs, he will fix it without thought.  He understands that there is no “ultimate” martial art—each has its advantages and its place.  He will be able to dominate the confrontation from flat on his back to 300 meters out. The Hojutsu practitioner will never need to worry what to do in confrontation—it will have already happened.

Soke Jeff Hall has been shooting for over 50 years and has been a student of firearms combatives for 40 years. He has over 25 years of military and police experience, with a strong emphasis on SWAT. He has also studied traditional arts for 40 years, holding ranks of 3rd Dan in Kobudo, Ia Tate Do, and Jiu-Jitsu; 5th Dan in Shudokan and and Gosoku-Ryu; and 10th Dan in Hojutsu. He is an NRA Distinguished Shooter, one of 25 Handgun Combat Masters in the world, a law enforcement Master Instructor, and currently studies Iaido and Arnis. Hall is a retired Alaska State Trooper lieutenant who spent nineteen years on the pistol team and 12 years on the SWAT team; he has used the techniques he teaches in combat. Hall travels across the U.S. and teaches nationally for several professional training associations. He has published numerous articles and has written several training manuals. He is an NRA certified instructor in handgun, shotgun, submachine gun, carbine, and precision rifle.

Hall shot competitively for many years and studied many styles and techniques in developing Hojutsu, after finding the military and police training inadequate. However, Hall's focus on shooting is to survive lethal encounters. He prefers the Weaver Stance (the Modern Technique). While some styles of shooting may do well in competition, Hall prefers what is proven in real combat. Additionally, there should be commonality in all training- the way we fight with empty hands should flow to sticks to knives to handguns, long guns, and back to empty hands. In developing Hojutsu, we believe that "He is Best who trains in the Severest school"- we train hard so we can fight easy.

In 2007 he was inducted into the US Martial Arts Hall of fame, recognized as the soke, and recognized as a Ju Dan (10th Dan) and martial arts

Norman Hood retired as a Command Sergeant Major from the US Army after 24 years of service, and then spent six years with the Alaska State Troopers before entering Government Security Contract positions. Norm has more than 35 years of experience in operational law enforcement, training, logistical and support planning for private security companies, military and state police organizations, as well as 28 plus years conducting rifle, pistol and shotgun training, including Concealed Carry courses as an independent contractor with a private firearms academy in Alaska and as a former adjunct instructor at Blackwater Worldwide, Inc. Norm is an NRA instructor and holds the “NRA Distinguished Expert Pistol” rating. He is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) and is certified by the State of Indiana as an Emergency Medical Responder, the State of Illinois as a Certified Firearms Instructor, GLOCK Professional as a GLOCK Armorer, and FEMA as an Active Shooter Responder Trainer. Norm is Shodan, 1st Dan (Black Belt) in Hojutsu-Ryu (the Martial Art of Shooting). Inducted in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

A bit unusual

Student in Carbine class, suddenly had a non working AR, it took some effort, but once we got it apart, found the extractor pin had sheared into 3 pieces and had caused the bolt to bind inside the carrier. She was using factory brass case ammo, and the gun had between 300 & 400 rounds fired. When the gun stopped it appeared to have a double feed, which it did in addition to  a non ejected case. It took some effort to get the carrier into battery once we cleared the double feed,  then we couldn't get the BCG to retract, even with motaring, so I broke the gun open, and removed the BCG and found bolt full extended and not moving, field stripped carrier, but had to tap bolt back into carrier to remove cam pin, then found bolt was most solidly stuck in carrier. Using a vise and a long roll pin punch that fit the tail of the bolt was able to get the bolt out of the carrier. Once the extractor pin was replaced bolt and carrier appear to work fine.

United States Vs Miller 1939
On March 30, 1939, the Supreme Court heard the case. Attorneys for the United States argued four points:
1. The NFA is intended as a revenue-collecting measure and therefore within the authority of the Department of the Treasury.
2. The defendants transported the shotgun from Oklahoma to Arkansas, and therefore used it in interstate commerce.
3. The Second Amendment protects only the ownership of military-type weapons appropriate for use in an organized militia.
4. The "double barrel 12-gauge Stevens shotgun having a barrel less than 18 inches in length, bearing identification number 76230" was never used in any militia organization.

I'm of the opinion we should try to elect as many new faces as we can, since they haven't yet drank the tainted kool aid
