Stimulus

In Ohio, spending by hunters and anglers directly supports 33,000 jobs paying a total of more than $934 million to working residents around the state

Spending by hunters and fishermen generates more than $195 million in state and local taxes annually.

The economic stimulus of hunting and fishing equates to $5.3 million a day being pumped into the state's economy.

Annual spending by sportsmen in Ohio totals more than $1.9 billion.

Wow...Hunters fishermen, and shooters do more for the economy than the Federal Government

Update: Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the location of Clemmons is not known, and it's possible he may still be in the neighborhood staked out overnight by Seattle police. Troyer also says people who know Clemmons told investigators that he had been shot in the torso.

I really hope they this guy and soon, details are sketchy,at this point. If the suspect is who they allege it to be is a convicted felon, they will blame the gunshow loophole, or such, and MAIG will get behind it to push for more restrictions.

Update: He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.

Crazy Day

The compression fitting for the pipe taking cold water to the classroom let go, so it was trip to Ace, and spent some time fixing, nothing like spending a saturday in a old wet crawlspace, but the plumbing is in good shape now!

Since the weather was decent continued the march on getting house painted, and I'm really pretty much down to trimming out the doors, if the weather allows I may even finish before spring!

So that was my day

In 1963, the body of President John F. Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

Jan 29th 1961:

Today we need a nation of minute men; citizens who are not only prepared to take up arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as a basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom. The cause of liberty, the cause of American, cannot succeed with any lesser effort. -John F Kennedy

Mikes headline: Palin limits crowd interaction at NC's Fort Bragg

The Army set the limits mikie, they were afraid of political grandstanding against barky.

The Department of Defense typically prohibits politicians from using installations as a platform, so Palin didn't give a speech and simply thanked soldiers individually. She was allowed to hold the event as a private citizen who was not campaigning, a Fort Bragg spokesman said.

Looking back

Well it's been a year since I left the job I held for 27 years, I was not really ready to go , but they were ready for me to leave. I never collected a cent of unemployment.

My career was designing, and making custom gas permeable contact lens, but it was shrinking field, with Lasik, and disposable contacts there was less every year. The Dayton area had 6 labs when I started, and there is only one left, and they are struggling to stay open. So I didn't bother looking for work.

We had been doing concealed carry classes in a spare room of the house, well really the only bedroom in the house had it's own outside entrance, we moved the bedroom into the living room, and converted it to a classroom, it was tight but it worked. It was really tight the time we had a class of 11 with 5 instructors

We had just had the training building built, when the job ended, and I kicked into gear, and finished the inside, which we had in use by December. Many thanks to Dana for the interior framing, and rough in wiring, and Jim helping hang the ceiling drywall, and Debby for helping with the paint. The 2 days before the first class we looked like a bunch of one armed paperhangers, trying to get it as far along as we could. We had it over 90% done when the students got there.

When spring rolled around we continued the work on the range and had it done by September. We built a target shed, and this fall installed a generator, for just in case. I finally after 16 years got the majority of the house painted, it needed it when I moved in. May even get it done if we get a few nice days. So in addition to training, I have kept myself busy.

Temptation reared it's head in the spring, a nearby Instructor charges around $35 less than I do, and runs from 75-90 people through a very basic class, I mean by basic, one of his students went to buy a gun, and when the dealer ask if they wanted a revolver or semi auto they didn't know the difference, but the guy was making around $7000-$8000 a day. So I was tempted to try the same thing, and make some real money.

We do an average of 6 to 8 students, and I pay another Instructor to help me, we also provide loaner guns, ammo, snacks and beverages, and sometimes lunch. We also provide a pretty detailed information crammed student packet, that isn't free.

But knowing it might be all the training most of my students would get, decided to continue what we were doing, and while not making nearly as much, I know we have a quality product, and give as much one on one training as is possible.

I have been able to acquire a few new or newer shooters, but have sold several to balance out the expense.

I didn't get to take as much training this year, a one day trip to TDI, a defensive Knife class, and Dave Grossmans Bulletproof Mind seminar, that was all I could fit in. I keep thinking the more I learn, the more I can pass to my students. I did make the annual NRA meeting, it fell the same weekend I had to go to Salt Lake City to renew my Utah Instructors License, so it worked out.
I did meet the Governor of Ohio, at the BFA fundraiser, which was kinda cool

It's been a good year, at times scary, but have managed to to pay the bills, and keep the lights on. I was taking 4-6 Zantac everyday, but have only had about 6 in the past year, so the acid reflux left about the same time the career ended. I don't dread each day anymore.

The training is a business, and I have made a sizable investment in it, but it is also a passion, and it is the passion that drives me. My motto has been from day one "Training first, money second", whether it's a single student or 10.

I'm looking forward to what the next year will bring.
Let me get this straight,

They are suing, because they can't drive, and the lions acted like well... Lions.

Cordray Warns Ohioans of Attorney General Impostor Scam
11/10/2009(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Attorney General Richard Cordray today warned Ohioans of a phone scam in which callers pose as representatives from the Attorney General’s Office and demand personal information. Cordray cautions that these calls are unauthorized and no personal information should be shared at any point.“We know that these scam artists are particularly assertive and in at least one instance have used threats of arrest and job loss,” said Cordray.
“Under no circumstances would employees of my office demand personal information or use threats to receive it. I strongly urge recipients of these phone calls to disconnect immediately and report the call to my office.
”Some reported calls have been automated in nature, while others have involved a live voice. In both scenarios, recipients were told to provide their Social Security numbers.Cordray offered the following guidelines to help Ohioans avoid falling victim to this type of scam:
Don’t give out personal information to an unexpected caller. The Attorney General’s Office will never call to ask you for your Social Security number. If a call seems suspicious, it probably is.
When in doubt, ask for the name of the organization and research it on your own. Call back to a listed number.
If you think you’ve given out your Social Security number in a scam, place an alert on your credit reports and monitor your credit reports for unauthorized activity. If you feel that you have fallen victim to a scam, file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office at www.SpeakOutOhio.gov or (800) 282-0515.

Acme Ammo Newsletter:

Howdy All!
Hunting season and major gun show season is well underway! We have been making the rounds in the Tri-State area and even heading into Pennsylvania last weekend. We have some new calibers to offer and we'd like to lead in with that.

We have begun loading 30-30 Winchester, the quintessential deer cartridge in many states. We are loading both a traditional 150 grain round nose AND the new Hornady 160 grain LeverEvolution FTX bullet that provides an aerodynamically bullet that is safe in tubular magazines. The FTX round makes the 30-30 a realistic 200 yard cartridge. The cost is $16.04 and $19.81 respectively per box of 20.

Also in the rifle arena, we are loading the venerable 30-06 Springfield. We have chosen to load these with the Hornady SST hunting bullets of 150 and 165 grains. These are loaded in NEW Prvi Partizan brass, as always, boxer primed and fully reloadable. These rounds are $22.64 per box of 20 for either weight bullet.

In the handgun arena, we are now loading .357 Magnum utilizing 158 grain bullets in both a flat nose round and a Hornady XTP hollow-point. These are loaded in brand new brass from Starline. The cost per box of 50 is $26.42 and $32.08 respectively.

FINALLY, we have received a shipment of new .45 Colt brass from Starline. These will be loaded this week and next with 240&250 grain Hornady XTP hollow-point bullets as well as some standard 200 & 250 grain lead projectiles. These will sold in boxes of 50 and priced at $39.62 for Hornady XTP rounds and $29.25 for the lead bullet variety. I suggest you place your order early because I expect these rounds will disappear even more quickly than our .380 product.

Our gun show schedule through the rest of this year looks like this:

Nov 21-22 Dayton OH at the Hara Arena
Nov 27-29 Lexington KY at the Heritage Hall
Dec 5-6 TBD
Dec 12-13 Louisville KY at the Expo Center
Dec 19-20 Valley Forge PA
Dec 26-27 MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Thank you so much for your continued support. We wish all the best in the coming holiday season.

The Democrats were right!

They told me if I voted for McCain, the nation's Hope would deteriorate, and sure enough there has been a 20 point drop in the Consumer Confidence Index since the election, reaching a lower point than any time during the Bush administration.

They told me if I voted for McCain, the US would become more deeply embroiled in the Middle East, and sure enough, tens of thousands of additional troops are scheduled to be deployed into Afghanistan.

They told me if I voted for McCain, that the economy would get worse, and sure enough unemployment is approaching 10% and the new stimulus packages recently sent the stock market lower than at any time since 9-11.

They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more "crooks" in high ranking positions in Federal government and sure enough, several recent cabinet nominees and Senate appointments revealed resumes of scandal, bribery and tax fraud.

They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more "Pork at the trough" in Federal government and sure enough, 17,500 "Pork Bills" showed up in Congress in just three weeks.

They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more deficit spending in D.C. and sure enough, Obama spent more in just 30 days than all other Presidents together in the history of the good 'ole USA. A 3.8 trillion dollar budget, with a 900 million dollar per day interest on this current debt.

I hate to admit it but the Democrats were right,

Never been a fan

Of the 40 S&W.

In 2004, I purchased two Browning HP's, one in 40, and one in 9mm, the idea being practice and train with the 9mm , and carry the 40, but when a I did shoot the 40 a bit, I noticed the groups getting bigger in a short period of time, so I decided to stick with 9mm, and the 40 found a new home.

I've also shot a number of student guns in 40, and well really find the recoil uncomfortable, now one thing I noticed oh around 20 years ago at the DCM shoots, (Now the CMP), was the older shooters would show up, and even before they shot, were rubbing the stiffness, out of their right shoulder, they nearly all had arthritis in the shooting shoulder, but not in the other. The effects of shooting Garands in 06, and M1A's in .308 had taken a toll over the years. Many gave up shooting High Power, and went to small bore (22's), and some quit all together.

But being younger, I didn't put 2 + 2 together, and shot a 30.06 bolt gun in HP, and an FN-Fal in 308 for tactical competition, and developed one hell of a flinch. I retreated to mouse guns (AR's) in 98. It took a year or two to get rid of the flinch.

But back to 40, a friend stopped over the other night, he is a bit older, than I and has carried and trained with a 40 XD for the past 5 years,, but he now has arthritis in his wrists, and wanted my opinion about scaling back to 9mm, as he is finding it painful in about 2 magazines.

I trained a young lady a couple of years ago, that had taken a CCW class somewhere, and didn't feel prepared to carry a gun, and asked if I could give her more training, she had one of the Smith/Walther guns in 40, and about 60 rounds in she told me she couldn't shoot anymore due to the pain in her wrists, and her last 10 shots showed a marked decline in marksmanship.

These are not the only 2, but the ones I picked

To be honest I'd prefer a 45, they shove but they don't kick. Bullet is moving slower.

The effect on joints over the years could effect your ability to pursue your enjoyment of shooting, in later years, of course you can be all macho, and say the recoil does not bother you, but, what is going on inside? Our bodies were not designed for recoil, period. I've also known some really big guys that it does not seem to bother, but they have more mass to absorb the recoil.

Now anyone that knows me, know I have more than a few firearms, and I tend to purchase used, to new, as well once the newness is worn off they tend to be more affordable, and in checking the used cases I'm finding more and more used 40's, and fewer 9's and 45's.

Perhaps on the plus side having a 40 wouldn't be a bad idea, with the current ammo shortage, the last 3 "Big Box" stores I checked were out of 9, 38, and 45, but they all had plenty of 40S&W ammo. I guess others are catching on to if it hurts, you are not going to find perfection with it.

The 40 is now 20, but I can't see that it has really outpaced the cartridges that were developed at the turn of the 20th century. Yes there are a lot of police departments with 40's but the cops seldom pick their guns, they carry what they are issued, and few if any of the people who made the decisions on what caliber a department will carry are shooters.

Since 95% of the cops are not shooters, and most retire around 55, and most only shoot 2-4 times a year, the long term effects of the wrist joints being pounded may not come to light.

But common sense should tell you if it hurts, it's not good for you.

Synopsis:
Homeland Siege uses current enemy intelligence as a lead-in to better tactical technique for U.S. troops and policemen. But this intelligence doesn’t come from some foreign shore; it comes from the borders, highways, and urban centers of America—with the enemy being international organized crime. The book first checks into which Hispanic and Asian gangs may be controlling the wholesale distribution of drugs. Then, it provides chapters on drug route identification, hostage rescue, and collateral-damage-free defense. All three topics should interest police and military alike. The lessons of Homeland Siege will make U.S. streets safer to walk and Afghan villages easier to pacify. Part One of Homeland Siege discusses the possibility of foreign power’s indirect assault on the American homeland. The most flagrant evidence of such an assault has been cyber, but it may well entail a mushrooming crime wave. Such things are possible in 4th-Generation Warfare (4GW)—that which is fought in the political, economic, psychological, and martial arenas simultaneously. If such an attack were in progress, U.S. leaders would be hesitant to commit enough of their Armed Forces to stop it. Part Two discusses the extent to which U.S. military and police missions have merged over the years. Then, Part Three offers extensively researched chapters on drug route identification, hostage rescue, and collateral-damage-free defense. They will help U.S. police to handle the next Stateside terrorist incident and U.S. service personnel to defeat the drug-funded Taliban

Time to Anti up!!

There are about 11 million citizens in the state of Ohio. And well over 4 million of them own at least one gun. But how many of them have given one minute or one dollar to protect their right to keep and use that firearm?

Ok this is important, send them $10, $20 bucks, but do something!
USCCA donated $10,000, they must deem it important.

I sent them a check for $500, and donated around $300 in flashlights, holsters for a silent auction to raise money, so I am putting my money with my mouth.

Support those that support you!
Quote of the day:

"I was confused and just shocked," said Spc. Jerry Richard, 27, who works at the center but was not on duty during the shooting. "Overseas you are ready for it. But here you can't even defend yourself."

Army: Suspect said `Allahu Akbar!' before shooting

While this case may not be deemed an act of terrorism, I imagine it was pretty dam terrifying for the people downrange, and will effect every soldier from every unit involved. Nor will they be able to put a lot of trust in other soldiers with Arab type names they serve with, it's not prejudice it's human nature.

So was it "Sudden Jihad Syndrome"?
What the Heck??????

The Range

It has greened up nicely, just in time for winter. We put about 150 tons of dirt behind canopy to act as a wind break, for winter shooting. But it will likely be added to mound by summer. I do need to get a new cover as that one has been up about 1 1/2 years, and is starting to come apart

Trained Response

Trained responses in our tactics, techniques and
procedures and especially in our skills for dealing with violent encounters, are
not an option. They are indeed the life-blood of how we will react in actual
violent encounters. Study, train and learn them and then sustain your abilities
with continued practice. No excuses accepted -

After reading Poole's books on tactics I'm more inclined to believe the Taliban than the Pakistan Goverment, besides the Taliban is not collecting millions of dollars in US aid.
