Mel Gibson, he may have said some things he shouldn't of when he was drunk, but it is cool to see not all of Hollywood is left of center.
Never had the honor to meet him, but he did guide my path with his writings
Preparation to survive the second attack—the legal aftermath of a justifiable defense shooting—is a vital element in your defense preparations. Ignore it at your own peril.
In general we get a gun and a ccw license, and heck we even go to the range once in awhile, but have you ever looked at that hunk of steel or polymer, and really ask yourself, if I ever use this thing then what?
Hopefully you have made a commitment to prepare train with your firearm, for a fight you hope never comes your way.
But are you also training, and preparing for the legal fight after the smoke has cleared?
The fight itself will likely last seconds, but the legal confrontation could last years.
To quote Robert Burka of: Ohio Concealed Carry Defense Services, LLC
The decision to carry a concealed handgun requires you to assume a great deal of responsibility. If you decide to accept that responsibility, there are several additional items you should consider.
First, you should obtain current and continuing training from a qualified instructor in the safe handling and use of your handgun. Contact us directly for a list of qualified instructors we have met and worked with over the past year.
Second, you should search for and obtain a working knowledge of what the law says and how the legal system operates in the event of a use of force situation. With knowledge and a realistic understanding of how the legal system works you can reduce your chances of a severely negative legal outcome.
Some Very Good advice here to get you started.
For your flashlight
One need I found was, what do you do with the light, if you say have to reload?
As Clint Smith says "When you reload in low light encounters, don't put your flashlight in your back pocket... If you light yourself up, you'll look like an angel or the tooth fairy...and you're gonna be one of 'em pretty soon."

Trijicon puts a bible reference on their product, which our soldiers use, is construed and twisted that we are defacto "Christian Crusaders invading Islam"
While we must have the up most respect for their Quran, and even rumors that we don't sparks riots and protests
What next soldiers will be forbidden to carry bibles or wear crosses or carry greenbacks?, as it would allow Muslim extremists to claim that the U.S. is waging a holy war in Iraq and Afghanistan?.
I really believe that 99% + of the Muslim community are likely good honest people, but they have done nothing to clean up the mess.
The Twin Towers, the Cole, the embassies, along with other numerous attacks on America, brought our military to them, nothing else.
I'd say in this round of the conflict we blinked, and they didn't have to do anything at all.
We are so worried that a reference to the bible will be used as a recruiting tool, might they just as well use an American quarter with "IN God We Trust" as one?
We are not after the people of Islam, we are after the people who misuse the the word of Islam, in an effort to hurt or destroy us. We will never defeat them by giving up on our principles, on our beliefs, we will only defeat them by tracking them down and killing them.
This is a war that we can not compromise, or coddle the enemy, they see that as weakness, and our weakness is what they seek to exploit. Remember history folks, compromise led to WWII. You win wars by being harder than your enemy, and making their cost to fight us higher than they want to pay. War is not civilised ask any veteran. to quote General William T Sherman: “War is at its best barbarism.”
"War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want."- General William T. Sherman, & "War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it, the crueler it is the sooner it will be over."

Your skills and knowledge and attitude will be of little use if your head is not in the game
I'll disagree with Ralph on this, I personally believe competition is a great way to hone your skills, and to take what you have learned in training to practice.
There are very very few ranges that will allow drawing from a holster, shooting on move etc. Plus competitive shooting instills a certain amount of stress, which is something you will have in the real world. Even quality training does not fully prepare you for the real world. Even force on force type classes do not prepare you for the real thing, after all everyone goes home after the class, in a real fight there is no "Lets try that over again". Also as Brigid wrote the other day if we do not work on those skills we will not retain them. If you take a class, then do not follow up with practicing the new skills they will soon fade in a short period. But if you attend a club match once a month you can hone and refine the skill, over time your heart does not beat as hard, your breath does not come in panting gasps. You calm down, and when you do you shoot better.
All Training is unrealistic, it teaches the mechanical skills, the hows and whys, etc, but it does not involve the distortions of combat. Does it have a purpose? Of course it does, it gives you the basic skills and knowledge to prevail.
All competition is unrealistic, I mean are you really going to take on 35-40 targets by yourself? But allows you to practice the skills & knowledge you got in training to a simulated environment. I played the game for several years, and may again. I was not a big winner, as I always attempted to do it the way I would in real life, while everyone else "played the game", but I nearly always came in around the top five in a match.
The only thing that prepares you for combat is combat where every decision you make could be life or death, where even making the right ones is no guarantee you'll survive. Combat is a place none of ever want to be in.
Massad Ayoob, has written of a number of shootings where competitive shooters prevailed
Training will give you the knowledge, skills and attitude. Competition will allow you to hone the knowledge and skills you learned in training, and you just have to have the attitude that it is what it is.
For a few we have access to a range that allows us to do whatever we want, I have my own. Hell if I want to stand on my head and draw from the holster I can. But for the large majority that's not an option, where the local gun club that does IPSC or IDPA is.
Training and competition complement each other

And here
I can't recall ever reading a post by a Gun Blogger threatening anyone, with violence, but boy, you do run across a number of anti's running their mouths, and this guy is even offering to come to our homes and punch us out, because that's the way he rolls.
One of the more interesting aspects of those who do legally carry a firearm, is they tend to be non confrontational, whereas the the Anti's are very confrontational, whereas they shouldn't be carrying guns. As they would likely use their guns to settle the most common of differences. I would suspect that the studies that indicate liberalism is a sign of mental illness, may well be true
Guess he didn't like my comment on his blog, Now he has deleted the entire post, guess he is not man enough to stand by what he said, all hot air and nothing else.

I've never been a fan, as they seem a bit harder to conceal, and you have to reach across the body to draw, and in close quarters, an attacker could pin your arm against your body.
