How Presidents use to vacation

The favorite hunting rifle of President Theodore Roosevelt was a Winchester Model 1895 lever-action rifle in .405 caliber. It was this rifle that accompanied the former commander in chief on a 1910 safari in Africa, as well as Roosevelt’s 1915 expedition to Brazil to find the source of the Amazon River. Roosevelt used his .405 to hunt moose, bear and elk stateside, too.

9mm Self Defense Loads

Insights put their thoughts here on JHP

I have to admit, I have gone over the FBI Handgun Wounding & Effectiveness report more than once, and they found HP's only expand in the area of 55-60% of the time, I will also admit there has been a lot of design progress on HP bullets since that report was released. Now HP's work on hydraulics, fill the cavity with soft tissue fast enough and the round opens, and we have seen a number of shootings where to heavy clothing the cavity is filled, and the round fails to open, hardened bone such as the sternum, can damage the tip in that nano-second of impact that is prevents opening, so we know there are failures to perform as advertised. In recent years I have been using expanding jacket ammo that relies on impact rather than hydraulics.

When I attended LFI, Massad recommended the Federal 124 gr Jacketed +P+ LE load for 9mm for hollow points in 9mm.

What is the trade off from traditional HP's and expanding jacket?, well in a word penetration. But ether design does meet the FBI requirements of at least 12 inches in test media, most exceed it, and from various reports I've seen the expanding jacket expands 98% of the time.

The expanding jacket designs do seem to feed more reliability, across the board, they do not over penetrate. They have been getting excellent feed back from the shootings, and there was a podcast somewhere on the net, that Massad said there have been very positive results from Hornady CD round.

So look at what's out there, as we all know some ammo has been hard to get, compare various loads, make you own decisions. Also keep in mind the ammo makers can tell you what their product will do in a test medium, but organic targets are unpredictable, as to how they will react to being hit with a certain round, or how the round will perform in that particular target. As I had posted awhile back, you can hit some people with a 22 short and they will drop like a bag of hammers, and others will soak up half dozen 45's and keep coming.

So we really are back to square one, Training, it ain't the gear that will save you, only your effective use of the gear will promote that.

The human target is a complex and durable one. A wide variety of psychological, physical, and physiological factors exist, all of them pertinent to the probability of incapacitation. However, except for the location of the wound and the amount of tissue destroyed, none of the factors are within the control of the law enforcement officer.

We all at one time or another get caught up in this gun or that gun this bullet or that bullet, and rather than argue about it here on the net, we should be at the range honing our skills.

It reminds me of a young student I had about 5 years ago, he was just getting ready to turn 21, and was taking his CCW class. During a break he came up to me, and mentioned he he had noticed that I was carrying a Browning HP, he went on to explain to me, that on the net he had read that they were obsolete, and and would be ineffective at stopping somebody, and perhaps I should consider getting a Glock 19 as they were proven man stoppers.

There was a moment of silence, and I replied I won't tell him what brand of gun I have and he won't know it's obsolete, & I'll hope for best.

Planning for a Tactical Class

Tips on being prepared for one of those expensive gun classes.

I usually pack about a week to 10 days before I go, make a check list, and use it.
Never take one gun, always have a back-up. When I took LFI I packed 3 High Powers, my primary had an extractor go on the 2nd day. Being all the same I only had to switch out the gun, mags holster stayed the same.

For your own sake dress for the weather! Get the proper clothing, footwear etc. and be prepared for mother nature. If your toes are freezing it's hard to pay attention to the Instructor, and get what you paid for.

I also pack 3 bags, a small daily range bag, a larger bag with ammo etc, left in car. I also have a go bag with the rain suit, bottled water, snacks, bug juice, sun screen etc. Sometimes it's a bit of a hike and 2 small bags are easier than one big bag.

Also have proper mag pouches, holsters etc, if you fighting your gear, you are not going to learn anything
Trying to stuff mags in your back pocket does not work well, If it takes batteries take spares.

But to make the most of your course prepare, and plan ahead.

Year in Review

Pretty busy, got the range finished, installed generator, got the house painted

Training didn't get to do a lot this year, Dave Grossman's Bulletproof Mind, one day at TDI, and a Defensive Knife class.

Gunwise, got a Para TTR, 3 Para pistols (the Tac-Five, the Carry 9, and a P18-9mm), a CZ75 cutaway for class, several 22's. Sold my Colt AR, my S&W 1911, and 3 of the Browning HP's, and a CZ83 cutaway so I came out about even for the year.

Business was fairly good, managed to keep the lights on, the gross good bit less than when I had an 8-5, but enough, and hopefully some of those new gun owners out there will decide they need more training.

2010
Hope to take more classes in the coming year, you always learn something. I'd like to take a class from Ken Hackathorn if anybody hears of one in the midwest, and I'd like to make it over to Boone County Indiana for some of the training they offer.

Crime Rates

Which is good news, until you know only around 60% of the police depts. report to the FBI, none of Chicago's numbers are on there. Don't relax, it's a simmering pot, and could go into boil anytime once the benefits run out.
It also seems everyone is impressed how much the murder rate has dropped, but remember if you get medical help pretty quick your chances of survival go way up, note the very small drop in Aggravated Assaults, and those go under reported.
Murder is not the way to measure crime rates, but assaults are. Bullet wounds that would have killed you 20 years ago are survivable today, providing you can get medical treatment fairly quickly.

Sig 357 Glock (model 31?) did well although it was getting to him by the time he qualified with the sharp recoil, but he did pass the qualifier by 1 shot. He did seem to be rethinking his choice of calibers.

Dan Wesson Switch barrel shot well, once we got his finger to index (he could shoot just poor safety habits) We did seem to get the point across about the importance of indexing.

Ruger P95 The guy had the gun sights jacked to the right, as he was gripping the gun in a fashion that he was taking the recoil on the first thumb joint, instead of the "V' of his hand. While I tried to show him a proper grip, he seemed to indicate he knew more about it.

Auto-Ordnance 1911 Well it was a combo of ammo, gun, and magazine malfunctions, with a bit of a ridge between the ramp and the barrel, a number of failures to feed, the ammo was from Georgia Arms?, seemed to not want to feed, and the mags were crap, I loaned him my Kimber but he used his mags, and it was better but not great, he did shoot well, and at the end of range time, I used a Wilson Combat, and some factory ammo, 1st round didn't want to go into battery, but once it was loaded ran well, I think a bit of polishing , good ammo, and a couple of good mags it would be a decent pistol. He did manage to shoot a 100% on the qualifier despite the malfunctions

Interarms StarFire 9mm, student had a lot more hand than gun, and we encountered feed problems with 2 different brands of ammo, I loaned him a Browning HP, and he improved with the first shot. With the longer sight radius, and bigger grip, he was rethinking his choice for CCW. As I recall the guns were pretty highly rated back in the 90's.

All in all it was a long 2 hours in the snow, and cold and dampness. We usually do not get this number of gun problems, or as many trips back to the classroom to get loaners or ammo or mags, to keep everyone running, Jim was able to keep those that were shooting going while I ran for stuff. But I suppose with 2 Instructors, and 5 students we were able to take the time to get them squared away, and send them in the right direction, by the end of the day. We only have 12 hours to train them, and really work to get them thinking about their choices, even the guy with the Ruger admitted he needed to work on his grip so I guess we made progress

Making the decision to carry

However, my advice to anyone who is considering the use of a firearm -- or
any potentially deadly weapon -- is to be absolutely certain you've made the
mental commitment to use that weapon if and when the time comes. If you're not
willing to use it, then you shouldn't be carrying it.

Todays Quote:

Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. — Ronald Reagan

One more try

Chiappa 1911-22

30 rounds Remington Golden Bullet, it is starting to group, 1 misfire, that was a light strike, fired 2nd try.

The trigger is it goes from very hard, to slightly less hard, and most everything went to the right, due to the extra trigger pressure, also now at less than 100 rounds the slide is showing wear from rubbing frame. Even the cat looks displeased
I thought at first

that they were serious

Of course I understand it hits like a 50 BMG ;-}

Someone just pointed out trigger guard was to small to insert finger, that's to prevent accidental discharges
Now that's a surprise!

I also picked up a Cimarron Plinkerton, with both 22lr and 22 Magnum cylinders, I really bought it for the price, seems in shipping the barrel had gotten a slight scuff, and he was selling it for $125, so even though I don't have a lot of use for a single action revolver, I thought why not?, Besides I do like 22 mags! It shot better one handed than the more expensive pistols did two handed.

I also decided to give the Sig Mosquito another chance, this time with Remington Golden Bullets,

I also tried the Chiappa again from a pistol rest this time with the Golden Bullet (10rds)

The Sig did better still it's a stiff trigger, The Chiappa trigger is really hard , and even with the rest the results were not pretty. no malfunctions with ether one.
Well that's good news!

Pelosi's Vocal Cords Give Out

To bad they will heal
Quick comparison:

S&W 22A 30 rounds Remington Thunderbolts Purchased new $229
no failures

Chiappa 1911-22 30 rounds Remington Thunderbolts Purchased new $299
3 failures to feed, one misfire (that fired 2nd time it was loaded)

Sig Mosquito 10 rounds Remington Thunderbolts Purchased used $279
one failure to extract

All shots at 7 yds, I shot the Sig first, then alternated between the Smith and the Chiappa, I had a bit of difficulty in keeping the Chiappa on target before the trigger break, that I fired the second mag from the bench. It was cold damp and breezy, so an extended test may have to wait. As I said in the earlier post I would expect the $300 Chiappa 1911 to perform at least as well as the Smith that is $70 cheaper. I did expect better out of Sig.

More here & here
Chiappa 1911 22lr

Picked one up this weekend

To say the least I'm under impressed

The Firearm blog covered it awhile back

The one I picked up came with 3 mags, and with the current ammo costs thought perhaps it would make a good trainer, being near the same costs of a starter Ruger or Browning ($300) I did expect reasonable quality. It is not a 1911, although resembles one, it is a fixed barrel, the recoil rod (plastic) sits in a hole in the frame, and pressure from the recoil spring keeps the slide release in place, with the recoil rod acting as a detent. The trigger was hard, not sure weather it can be smoothed or lightened, I would guess the final break would be around 10 lbs.
The dimensions are slightly smaller than a standard 1911 so it is a bit floppy in the holsters I use.
I've only run one magazine of Winchester standard Vel. ammo and had 2 failures to eject( although manual states one should use ammo at least at 1066fps).
The overall impression in handling take down, and firing was the gun is chinzey, something I would expect in a gun under $200 (Like a Jennings or Lorcin). I have S&W 22A's that I paid $229 for new that are much better quality.

I'll try to get to range today and test a bit more, but overall, if Chiappa wants to sell this gun at this price they need to up the quality. I wouldn't recommend it.

Jamaica

Jamaica Deploys 700 Police Officers as Island Nears Record Number of Killings

Seems they have pretty tight gun control laws

Compare by population Jamaica 2,780,132 (July 2007 est.) Over 1600 Homicides
USA over 300 million around 14,000 Homicides (2008 FBI UCR)

So we have over 100 times the population, but only 10 times the homicides, with "lax" gun laws.
I would also doubt that there are very many homicides caused by self defense in Jamaica, while in the US it is estimated that about 11% are self defense or legal intervention (Source Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns by:J. Neil Schulman) and as a side note in 2006 I tracked the results of every homicide in Cincinnati Ohio there were 89, 9 were deemed self defense, and that results in slightly over 10%

Holster Fit

Now for me paddles work pretty well, can't do inside the pants, with my height even a small gun digs in. But not all paddles work, I have found with the full size hi cap Paras that the Blackhawk Sherpa works the best, But the Commanders, and HP's work well in the Stoner paddle very well.

The Charge Of The Light Brigade
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Memorializing Events in the Battle of Balaclava, October 25, 1854 Published 12/09/ 1854
Half a league half a league, Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred: 'Forward, the Light Brigade!

Charge for the guns' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!' Was there a man dismay'd ?

Not tho' the soldier knew Some one had blunder'd:

Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do & die,

Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them

Volley'd & thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell,

Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death,

Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd as they turn'd in air Sabring the gunners there,

Charging an army while All the world wonder'd:

Plunged in the battery-smoke Right thro' the line they broke;

Cossack & Russian Reel'd from the sabre-stroke,

Shatter'd & sunder'd. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them

Volley'd and thunder'd;

Storm'd at with shot and shell, While horse & hero fell,

They that had fought so well Came thro' the jaws of Death,

Back from the mouth of Hell,

All that was left of them, Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made!

All the world wonder'd. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade,

Noble six hundred!
