Most likely is the gas line predates the range. There are gas lines everywhere in CA. Do not be surprised if there is a line beneath the drive to your home. Not kidding.
I have never heard of an explosion in the range. I have been researching on range safety measures and this seems to be an isolated case. They take every precaution to avoid such accidents.
